From Hospitality to Becoming a Registered Behaviour Technician (RBT): Samu Taukei’s Achievement

We’re delighted to announce that Samu Taukei, who joined Green Light in May 2021, has passed his Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) exam in London on Friday 20th September 2024.

Samu’s journey from the Hospitality industry to Health and Social Care highlights the opportunities available for those considering a career shift, into a sector focused on making a real difference in people’s lives.  Like many in hospitality, Samu was searching for a more fulfilling path, and his shift to Green Light —supporting adults with learning disabilities and autism—allowed him to make a direct, positive impact.

Samu’s easy-going, patient, and empathetic nature has enabled him to form strong connections with the individuals he supports. His passion for cooking, outdoor activities, and sports has also played a key role in fostering positive relationships. The skills and adaptability Samu gained in hospitality have translated well into his new role, demonstrating that prior experience in health and social care isn’t necessary for success in this field.

For those considering making a similar change, becoming a Support Worker, or Registered Behaviour Technician is a practical step.

After becoming a Behaviour Technician, Samu was provided theory training in six key areas, set by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB), including Measurement (tracking behaviour to guide interventions), Assessment (tailoring support to individual needs), Skills Acquisition (promoting independence), Behaviour Reduction (teaching alternative behaviours), Documentation & Reporting (ensuring progress is well-documented), and Professional Conduct (working ethically and within scope). These skills, learned on the job, and with close support and supervision from a qualified Behaviour Analyst, are highly transferable and provide a clear path toward professional growth.

Samu’s story shows that moving from hospitality into health and social care offers a more meaningful career and a chance to use existing skills in new, impactful ways. If you’re looking for a career change, health and social care might be the fulfilling and rewarding step you’ve been searching for.

Congratulations to Samu on passing the exam and a big thanks to Darina Donnellan for the support and supervision provided to Samu.
