Meet the Team – Samu Taukei

Published by Jo on 24th May 2021

Kerry Noonan who leads Green Light’s recruitment caught up with Samu Taukei who decided to join Green Light from a career in hospitality in early May 2021.  He is now a Support Worker with the Big Wig Team who support three adults with autism and learning disabilities in the home in Holywell Bay, just outside of Newquay.

Q: Why did you decide to join Green Light ?

A: When the hospitality industry shut down due to covid, I had a lot of time to think about what I wanted to do.  I decided I really wanted to make a positive impact and difference to someone’s life and felt like I had lost my enthusiasm for cheffing. I also strongly believe in Green Light’s ethos which is to empower people with autism and disabilities to live a lifestyle they are proud of.

Q: How did you hear about Green Light ?

A: Through social media and friends

Q: What experience of autism or learning disabilities did you have previously?

A: I had no experience but I guess I now get the opportunity to learn!

Q: Do you have any special skills, hobbies or interests you can transfer to your new role?

A: I love cooking, going out for walks in the woodlands and on the beach and bike rides.  I’m loving the fact that, already, in my first week, I’ve been able to do all of these things whilst working for Green Light. I’ve explored so much of cornwall during my first week which has been absolutely awesome.  I am also a big sports fan and very much love rugby, basketball and American football.

Q: What’s your best experience so far in the service you support?

A: Being able to go out and explore new places that I haven’t been to before has been great.  It’s also been really rewarding to develop good working relationships with the people we support. The fact that I am able to put a smile on their faces is much more rewarding for me than anything – knowing that I’ve made a positive impact on their life for a brief moment. I also love the massive support you get from everyone whether it’s the admin team, managers, support workers and even the community makes you feel so welcome.

Q: How does Health & Social Care compare with working in Hospitality?

A:  I have worked in the hospitality industry and kitchens for nearly 10 years and it was no longer enjoyable for me – everyday was quite similar and I didn’t like being indoors all day!  Also, Greenlight has a good work life balance where you’re able to enjoy life with friends and family. One bonus is having every other weekend off which I was not able to do previously.  I’ve found my first week to be so rewarding and interesting in comparison.

Q: What three words sum up your personality?

A: Easy going, patient and empathetic.

Thank you Samu for sharing your experience so far.
